Our read on Arbitrum

Leading L2 by TVLEstablished ecosystemGovernance token

Arbitrum holds the top TVL position among Ethereum Layer 2s and hosts major dApps, but its token functions as a governance instrument over a fixed 10B supply with 3,214,425,395 tokens outside current circulation.

The bull case

  • Holds the leading TVL position among Ethereum Layer 2 solutions, anchoring deep liquidity.
  • Hosts major established dApps including GMX, Radiant, Uniswap V3, and Gains Network, giving the chain native utility and revenue-generating activity.
  • Uses optimistic rollup architecture to deliver cheap transactions while preserving an execution environment that feels very similar to Ethereum, easing developer and user onboarding.

The bear case

  • 3,214,425,395 ARB of the 10B fixed supply is outside current circulation, meaning a substantial portion of tokens remains to be distributed and could exert sell pressure depending on distribution schedules.
  • The optimistic rollup model relies on a fraud-proof challenge window, introducing a withdrawal delay to Ethereum mainnet that competing zero-knowledge rollup architectures aim to eliminate.
  • ARB is categorised as a governance token, so its value capture depends on whether protocol revenues or fee switches are routed to token holders rather than accruing only to the sequencer.
01

What Arbitrum is

Arbitrum is an Ethereum scaling solution built as an optimistic rollup. It batches transactions off-chain and posts compressed data to Ethereum, inheriting the base layer's security while reducing fees and throughput constraints.

The project describes itself as one of the leading Ethereum scaling solutions, bringing cheap transactions to tens of thousands of users in an environment that feels very similar to Ethereum. It ranks as the leading L2 in terms of TVL.

The ecosystem hosts several large decentralised applications, including GMX, Radiant, Uniswap V3, and Gains Network, spanning perpetuals, lending, and spot exchange use cases.

02

How it works

As an optimistic rollup, Arbitrum assumes transactions are valid by default and posts them to Ethereum without computing each one on-chain. A challenge window allows anyone to submit a fraud proof if they detect an invalid state transition, triggering a dispute resolution process on L1.

This architecture lets Arbitrum inherit Ethereum's settlement and data-availability guarantees while executing smart contracts more cheaply off-chain. The result is a user experience that mirrors Ethereum's EVM environment but at a fraction of the gas cost.

Because withdrawals require the challenge period to elapse before funds can move from L2 to Ethereum mainnet, there is an inherent delay in moving assets across layers.

03

Tokenomics

ARB has a fixed max supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens and a total supply of 10,000,000,000, meaning no additional tokens will ever be created beyond the cap.

Circulating supply stands at 6,785,574,605 ARB, leaving 3,214,425,395 tokens outside current circulation. The token is categorised under Governance, indicating its primary on-chain function is protocol decision-making rather than gas payment or staking.

The fixed supply provides a known upper bound on dilution, but the large non-circulating portion means future distribution dynamics remain a factor for holders to monitor.

04

Competitive edge

Arbitrum's primary competitive edge is its position as the leading L2 in terms of TVL, which creates a liquidity moat. Major protocols building on the chain benefit from deep liquidity, which in turn attracts more users and applications.

The EVM-compatible execution environment reduces friction for developers porting Ethereum dApps, while the optimistic rollup design has been battle-tested with live applications processing real volume.

The combination of leading TVL, established dApps like GMX and Uniswap V3, and an Ethereum-like developer experience positions Arbitrum as the incumbent optimistic rollup against newer zero-knowledge competitors.
