The bull case
- Addresses a critical and growing need for privacy-preserving proof-of-human verification in an AI-saturated digital world.
- The 75% community allocation is exceptionally high, theoretically enabling broad distribution and user ownership of the network.
- Zero-knowledge proofs allow for humanness verification without exposing underlying personal data, a strong privacy design choice.
- The physical Orb creates a sybil-resistance barrier that purely digital solutions cannot replicate, forming a unique competitive moat.
The bear case
- The token supply will expand dramatically from 3.6B to 10B over 15 years, creating sustained inflationary pressure on circulating value.
- Team and investor tokens (24.7% combined) begin unlocking after a 12-month cliff, with the majority unlocking linearly over 48 months, representing a significant overhang.
- Reliance on a global network of physical Orb devices introduces complex logistical, security, and trust challenges for operators and users.
- Collecting biometric data, even with privacy-preserving claims, exposes the project to intense and unpredictable regulatory risk across multiple jurisdictions.
What Worldcoin is
Worldcoin is a protocol designed to create a global identity and financial network built around World ID, a privacy-preserving proof-of-human system. The project's core mission is to provide foundational infrastructure for an internet where distinguishing between humans and AI agents becomes essential. It aims to function as a public utility, giving ownership to everyone who participates.
The system combines a digital identity protocol with a physical hardware device called the Orb. The Orb uses multispectral sensors to verify an individual's uniqueness and humanness, issuing a World ID that can then be used across various platforms. This verification process is designed to delete all images on-device by default, unless a user explicitly opts into Data Custody.
Alongside the identity layer, the Worldcoin token (WLD) functions as a utility and governance token. All holders of an Orb-verified World ID are entitled to claim recurring grants of free WLD tokens, subject to availability, creating a direct economic incentive for human verification and network participation.
How it works
To join the network, an individual downloads a compatible wallet app and visits a physical Orb, which is operated by a network of independent local businesses called Orb Operators. The Orb scans the user's iris to confirm they are a real, unique human and issues an Orb-verified World ID. This process is designed to be privacy-preserving, using zero-knowledge proofs that allow a user to prove their humanness to a third party without revealing their identity or personal data.
Once verified, a user can use their World ID to authenticate with any integrated platform. This can enable fair airdrops, protect against bots and sybil attacks on social media, and facilitate fairer distribution of limited resources. The protocol also envisions enabling global democratic processes and novel forms of governance, such as quadratic voting.
The WLD token is integrated into this system as both a governance mechanism and a recurring incentive. Verified users can claim periodic grants of WLD, which also grants them a voice in the future direction of the Worldcoin protocol.
Tokenomics
The WLD token has a fixed maximum and total supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens. The allocation is heavily weighted towards the community, with 75% of the total supply designated for the World Community. The remaining supply is split between the team (11.1%), Tools for Humanity (TFH) investors (13.6%), and a TFH Reserve (0.3%).
At launch, only 0.5 billion WLD were unlocked. The circulating supply currently stands at 3,616,312,925 WLD, meaning a significant portion of the eventual 10 billion supply is yet to enter circulation. The token is designed as a utility token with governance properties, with its primary use case being the recurring grants distributed to verified World ID holders.

Token unlocks and emissions
The unlock schedule for the community allocation is structured over a 15-year period. From launch to the end of year 3, a total of 4 billion WLD will be unlocked. The pace then slows: 1.75 billion WLD unlock from the start of year 4 to the end of year 6, followed by 0.875 billion WLD from year 7 to year 9, and a final 0.875 billion WLD from year 10 to year 15, bringing the cumulative unlocked total to 7.5 billion WLD.
For team and investor tokens, the structure is more compressed. These tokens were fully locked for the first 12 months. After this cliff, approximately 80% began unlocking linearly over a 48-month period, while the remaining 20% unlock linearly over a 24-month period. Tokens in the TFH Reserve are contractually locked for at least one year, followed by a two-year linear unlock from the time they are allocated.

TFH Team and Investor Tokens Lockup
TFH team and investor tokens were contractually fully locked up for 12 months. After the full lockup, approximately 80% started unlocking linearly over a 48-month period while approximately 20% unlock linearly over a 24-month period.
TFH Reserve Lockup
Tokens in the TFH Reserve are contractually locked up for at least one year of full lockup plus two years of linear unlock from the time they are allocated.
Competitive edge
Worldcoin's primary competitive edge lies in its hardware-based sybil-resistance mechanism. While most digital identity solutions rely on web-of-trust, social graphs, or video verification, the Orb's multispectral biometric scan provides a fundamentally different and harder-to-spoof means of verifying uniqueness. This creates a high barrier to entry for any competitor attempting to build a similarly robust global identity network.
The integration of a direct token incentive with identity verification is another distinguishing feature. By offering recurring WLD grants to verified humans, the protocol directly subsidizes the growth of its network, aligning economic incentives with the expansion of its user base in a way that purely credential-based systems do not.
The Orb's biometric verification creates a sybil-resistance moat that purely digital identity solutions cannot replicate, while recurring token grants directly incentivize global network growth.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the purpose of the Orb device?
- The Orb is a physical imaging device that uses multispectral sensors to verify an individual's humanness and uniqueness, issuing an Orb-verified World ID. All images are promptly deleted on-device by default unless a user explicitly consents to Data Custody.
- How does the WLD token unlock schedule work?
- The community allocation of 7.5 billion WLD unlocks over 15 years, with the fastest pace in the first 3 years (4 billion WLD unlocked). Team and investor tokens were locked for 12 months, after which roughly 80% unlock linearly over 48 months and 20% over 24 months.
- What can World ID be used for?
- World ID enables users to prove they are a unique human online using zero-knowledge proofs. This can be used for fair airdrops, bot protection on social media, fairer distribution of governmental resources, and enabling novel governance mechanisms like quadratic voting.
